The Big Bertha was a major invention during the World War I. Big Bertha was a Howitzer gun which is just this gun that shoots explosives. The difference between Big Bertha and a normal Howitzer is the size. The Big Bertha was a lot bigger then a normal Howitzer.
German U-Boat
Germany was one of the major super powers during World War I. What made them this powerful was their strong navy. With the invention of the German U-Boat no one could stop their rule over the seas. They had full control of the seas until the United States had joined.
Powers
World War I had started because of the difference in ideas between countries. This mad a split in the continent of Europe. It split people in the Allied powers and the Central powers. The central powers consisted of main Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Ottoman Empire. The Allied powers were England, France, Italy, Russia, and the United States.
The Start of World War I
The main conflict started between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. The Archduke of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian group called the Black Hand. The war was mainly put on Germany because they antagonized Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia which created the Central Powers and Allied Powers.
The End of a War
The end of World War I was the creation of the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty placed World War I on Germany, blaming them for everything that happened. The Treaty of Versailles prevented Germany from making an army, lose some of it's land and made Germany pay for a lot of the damage caused during the war. Many say this is what caused the spark of World War II.
Sinking of the Lusitania
The reason United States joined the war was because of the many reasons. One of the reasons was the sinking of a cargo ship called the Lusitania. The Lusitania was shot down by a German U-boat. The ship had a number of American civilians on the ship when it was shot down. This caused United States to feel like they needed to step in.
Zimmerman Telegram
The Zimmerman Telegram was a telegram intercepted by Great Britain. The telegram was from Germany being sent to Mexico. The telegram was stating that if Mexico could keep us out of the war by starting another war against the United States. The Zimmerman Telegram also said that when the Central Powers won all the land that United States took from Mexico would be given back as long as they kept us out of the war.
No Mans Land
During World War I when people were fighting, most of the time they were at a stalemate. They would dig out trenches and shoot at each other from inside the trenches. In the middle of the two trenches it was called No Mans Land which meant that no man could cross it. Some people even recalling that if you were to peak your head over the trench you would get shot.
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare was a battle strategy that was adopted by Germany during World War I. The strategy stated that anyone in the sea was fair game and would be sunk. This is the strategy that caused the sinking of the Lusitania. Many say this strategy was the cause of why Germany lost World War I.
Propaganda
Not many people who weren't in the war didn't get any input. One way the american civilians could get involved was through the propaganda posters they created. Propaganda posters were also used to help recruit people into the army. Like the one shown. They use the political figure known as Uncle Sam to show that you can join the war and enroll.
