Bauhaus architecture

The Bauhaus movement was characterized by combining the senses of the fine arts and industry, it also included the focus of economic sensibility, simplicity and mass production. The movement was one of the most influential and inspiring in modern and contemporary art and architecture.

Walter Gropius

Walter Gropius was a master of modernist architecture. He was born in Berlin but fled Nazi Germany in 1934. He founded the Bauhaus school and with it, its influential and incredible art style. After fleeing Germany, Gropius went on to build works in London, Boston, New York ect. He also taught at Harvard Design School. Even with his successful career Gropius couldn't draw and throughout his career depended on collaborators and partner interpreters.

Bauhaus school weimar 1919-1925

The School first set itself up in Weimar in 1919, and united all branches of the arts under one roof. It acted as a learning ground for some of Europe's most well known artists. Artists like Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee lectured and taught at the school, giving it it's international prestige.

Dessau 1925-32

Due to increasing pressure of the right-winged parties the school moved out of Weimar and in these years increased it's focus on architecture,

Berlin 1932-1933

In a last attempt to keep the school open, the school campus was moved to Berlin but closed a year later due to the Nazi's.

The Bauhaus Legacy

Even after closure of the school, the influence and aesthetic of the school persisted. The school and Walter Gropius shaped modernistic architecture all around first Europe and then the world. It's ideology of letting the nature of an object define it and inspire the artist to work around its rawness has persisted all the way till now. The Bauhaus Center in Tel Aviv, White City, is the greatest concentration of Bauhaus buildings in the world.

Walter Gropius works internationally

Even after Walter Gropius had to close his school and flee Germany, as his art and it's expression of freedom and embracement of nature, clashed with the Nazi ideology, he went on to work successfully internationally. First in the United Kingdom and then in the USA.

Bruno Taut

Bruno Taut was a prolific german architect and specialised in urban planning. He was known for his theoretical works and desgins aswell as his use of colours of his buildings. 1921-24 he worked as the city architect in Magdeburg and built multiple housing estates in a urban style, he then moved to Berlin in 1924 where he continued his housing estate developments. His estates Schillerpark and Wohnstadt Carl-Legin have been made UNESCO world heritage sites. He was persecuted by the Nazis for being a 'cultural Bolshevik' and a 'master of colourful architecture'.

Taut-Horseshoe

The Horseshoe estate is another one of his famous and successful urban housing developments. After leaving Germany he spent some time in the Soviet Union before going into permanent exile and moving to Japan and the finally Istanbul.

Ernst May

Another Architect of great success was Ernst May, who was also a city planner. His urban design and technique style of bulding gave him the opportunity to redesign the city of Frankfurt. With housing shortage, he developed housing estates that were remarkable for their time as they were compact, included playgrounds, washing areas, shops and were semi-independent complexes. May's Frankfurt was praised as a civic and critical success. In 2 years he had managed to build more than 5000 housing units and after 5 years he had built 15000.
