What started The Womens right movement.

What started the womens right movement was that women wanted the right to vote.This started out in the 1920/30s, when the only people who had the right to vote where white men.

major event: 15th amendment

When the 15th amendment was passed it allowed Black men to have the right to vote while all women still did not have the right, even with this being a step forward for african american peoplw this was a step back for woemen.

1890 two groups merged to form one. Before The National American Womens Suffrage Association was formed the two groups that made up this organisation were the National Women's Suffrage Association and they did not support the 15th amendment unlike the American Women's Suffrage Association.

July 2, 1964: President Lyndon B. Johnson, signs the Civil Rights Act into law; Title VII bans employment discrimination based on race, religion, national origin or sex.

Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was a very influental person during the Women's Rights movement, she was one of the people to form the movement.

Sandra Day O’Connor is sworn in by President Ronald Reagan as the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. She retires in 2006, after serving for 24 years.

Jan. 23, 1997: Also nominated by Clinton, Madeleine Albright is sworn in as the nation’s first female secretary of state

women entering work force

The number of women entering the work force has gone up throught out history with the help of the womens right movement.

why women protest

-Married women were legally dead in the eyes of the law

-Women were not allowed to vote

-Women had to submit to laws when they had no voice in their formation

-Married women had no property rights

-Husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity

-Divorce and child custody laws favored men, giving no rights to women

-Women had to pay property taxes although they had no representation in the levying of these taxes

-Most occupations were closed to women and when women did work they were paid only a fraction of what men earned

-Women were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law

-Women had no means to gain an education since no college or university would accept women students

-With only a few exceptions, women were not allowed to participate in the affairs of the church

-Women were robbed of their self-confidence and self-respect, and were made totally dependent on men

-To what extent did one of the major Civil Rights Movements achieve its goals of increased rights for its target group?

Women are now able to vote and work jobs that men work and have traveled to the moon, women have gained a lot more rights than they used to have but there are still some differences that need to be faced. Women still do not have equal pay as men in most work forces, the women's rights movement set up national childcare so women could work outside of the home. With Womens rights protected LGBTQ rights, Sexual harassment was legally defined in 1980, after tireless work by the feminist movement, which created the term. The women’s movement also defined the term “domestic abuse” for the first time, made spousal abuse illegal and opened the first shelters for women. Lastly the women's right movement stood up to rape culture legally changing the definicion.
