Equality

During the 19th century African Americans and Women wanted the same rights as white men who were free to do whatever they choose.

After the civil war African Americans were still not getting equal civil rights. Many Black leaders came forward with their views on the topics. One man, Marcus Garvey, was for segregation rather integration. He thought that blacks should just go back to Africa. He even organized 2 ships going back to Africa. He thought blacks were never going to get equality so they should just not fight and go back to somewhere where they could get equality

The Founders of Niagara Movement

WEB DuBois formed the Niagara Movement. This was an organization to help black rights. The members of the organization made a plan to approach what they wanted with an aggressive approach and demanded manhood suffrage, equal educational rights, full civil rights, equal economics an end to segregation, and prohibition of discrimination in courts, public facilities, and trade unions. The demands they came up with were part of the "Declaration of Principals". All the people in this picture are black leaders to get civil rights passed.

The Hunger Strike of Women's Suffrage

During the 19th Century women demanded for equal rights as men. Many got arrested for protests and ended up in jail. One of these women who got thrown in jail was one of the leaders of women's suffrage, this was Alice Paul. Alice Paul started a hunger strike in jail, where she would not eat anything until women got what they wanted. The jail did not want the women to die so they would take a woman and tie her down to a chain and engorge a tube down her throat with a funnel and feed the woman raw eggs down her throat. She would upchuck after each session. It was terrible.

Ms. Alice Paul

Alice Paul was a very famous leader of Women's suffrage. She was a student for economics and Political Science in which she got a PhD in. She then joined the movement of the equality of women. She would heckle politicians, have protests, and the most famous, a hunger strike. Ms. Paul got arrested 3 times for protesting outside the White House. She was a very big impact of getting the 19th amendment passed, which was the right to have women vote.

The 19th Amendment of the Constitution

The 19th amendment was a very difficult amendment to get passed. This amendment would be the amendment that declared the right for women to vote. We owe a world of gratitude to Alice Paul, Carrie Chapman Catt, and other women leaders, because they fought a challenging battle to get this amendment passed. It changed the USA forever and made it more appealing because now women were seen as equals.

Carrie Chapman Catt

Carrie Chapman Catt was a major leader in the Woman's Movement. She studied at Iowa State College and then became a superintendent of schooling, in 1884. By 1890 she organized the Woman's Suffrage Association, this was one of the big events that started the movement. Catt became the president of NAWSA (national american woman's suffrage association) and therefore became a big leader of getting civil rights for women everywhere.

The Lynching Caused by Color

Lynching is a terrible act of hatred. Lynching, by definition, is the illegal execution of an accused person by a mob. After the civil war African Americans still didn't have the rights they wanted so when they fought for justice, mostly people in the south that were white wanted to teach them a lesson. Whites wanted black people to fear them, so they made an example of what they could do. To show their hatred they would lynch black men. The mobs would never get caught either. It was a horrendous act.

The NAACP

This organization stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The association was formed by WEB DuBois, Ida Bell Wells-Barnett, and Mary White Ovington. They were involved in battles against segregation, and all sorts of racial discrimination. The NAACP also helped the movement of Women's Suffrage. They fought a huge battle against lynching and wanted everyone to become aware on how horrible blacks were being treated.

Brooker T. Washington

Brooker T. Washington was a major African American leader. He was born a slave but with perseverance he pushed his way through all the hate and made his way out of poverty. He got an education at the Hampton Institute. He encouraged blacks to prove racists wrong and get an education. He wanted blacks to be seen as equals and he thought the only way to do that was to earn respect from them. He actually founded the Tuskegee Institute which was a school that taught anyone vocational educations. He was big into getting an education.
