During the Civil War they had what we would call ambulances that would transport through rail or horse. After being taken to a tent used for surgeries and doctors they would start the amputation process. In the image above it shows an amputee being worked on.
Medical Equipment
Many surgeons throughout the war used a kit designed and put together by Dr. George Fordyce Newell. It consisted of two surgical saws, cutting pliers, curved probe, clamps, a retractor, a brush, and trepanning instruments.
Amputees
Amputations were very common and thought to be the solution to almost every situation. But mainly when they were shot. The photo above show some patients after getting one of their limbs amputated.
Prostheic Legs
Amputations were very dangerous and tedious operations. One wrong move could possibly end ones life. The most fatal amputation area was the leg as it is extremely close to the torso/ stomach. Prosthetic legs were designed and created in hopes that these amputees could live a normal life again.
Prosthetic leg patent
Above shows an original patent of the prosthetic leg created by J.E. Hanger.
Bone pit
Surprisingly, many surgeons were very efficient and professionally got the job done. Researchers today analyze some bone structures and etc and see that the cuts made were very clean and precise for what they had.
Arm aputations
Arm amputations were one of the least deadliest to preform. They were often quick surgeries and would be cut in circular motions or through flaps of skin.
Death rates
As shown above, all amputations that took place near the upper torso would lead to immediate death. Making most amputations take place on or near the leg very deadly. Such as the thigh and hip joint.
Causes
There were a variety of causes for amputations. But the most common was the Minie Ball. It pierced through skin and bone and would be very hard to find in the bone structure since it is so small. It was the leading cause of death and many amputees died before or during the surgery.
Tribute
After the Civil War, all that had a pinned empty sleeve was greatly admired. Not only for their bravery but for their sacrifices as well. They were noblemen and this painting was created to honor them and show how society has changed for the better
