The Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17th, 1862 at Sharpsburg Maryland. The Confederacy needed the win because they needed to convince England and France to join the War on their side. The Union needed to win because Lincoln wanted to pass the Emancipation Proclamation. The bloodiest battle in American history resulted in a win for the Union and Lincoln was able to pass the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in the Confederacy. Charles Hyer and Oliver Hyer also fought each other at this battle.
Roles in the War
The Hyers held many different roles while in the Army on both sides. There is proof of at least one Hyer being a Private, a Sergeant, a First Sergeant, a Second Sergeant, a Musician, a Bugler, a Corporal, First Lieutenant, and Captain.
United States Colored Troops
The U.S. Colored Troops were regiments of mainly African Americans along with other minority groups who wanted to fight the Confederacy. These troops made up about 10% of the Union troops and 25% of the Union Navy. The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was the first official African American regiment. It came to be after the Emancipation Proclamation was passed by Lincoln, freeing all slaves in the Confederacy. One of these men was Thomas Hyer, who was born 1835-36 and fought for the Union when he was around 27. Thomas Hyer joined the 4th Colored Infantry around 1863 and for a time, his regiment was assigned to guard the nation's capital.

The first Hyer in America was Walter Hyer who sailed to the New World in about 1650 from Kingston, Surrey, England. He and his son and wife settled in New York, New York and the family grew from there. There are records of a man named Willem(William) Hyer who had an ad for a runaway slave in the newspaper. Immigrants have come to the United States from England, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Ireland, Prussia, France, and Sweden.
