One thing that helped America stand their own against the powerhouse that is Britain is the fact that the colonists were fighting for something they believed in. They had motivation and patriotism that the British army could only dream of.

This battle marked the first military action taken for America's independence. Despite many loses taken by the colonists, it proved to Britain that they were taking this fight seriously.
The Battle of Bunker Hill
During this battle, both sides lost many lives. This helped prove to the colonists that they had a chance against Britain's advanced army. They were then able to turn this into motivation to keep moving forward.
Declaration of Independence
Eventually America became more trouble than it was worth to Britain and were able to declare their independence.
Join or Die
Without any prior experience or skill, the colonies were able to come together and produce an army that could withstand one of the greatest armies on the planet.
