The impact of the steam engine in causing the Industrial Revolution

during the industrial revolution living conditions in towns were extremely awful where houses were built right next to eachother earning the name back-to-backs as they had no gardens and were rows against rows and connected to one another.The homes were made with the cheap materials and lacked features such as windows and ventilation. plus,most of the homes were built without running water or sanitation. As a result, many people were unable to properly bathe and thus suffered from very poor hygiene. more issues were that the towns suffered with overcrowding, diseases spreading and pollution. overcrowding happened due to families moving to the towns in search of work resulting in many homes being built to house them all. it was common for large families to live in relatively small rooms and even share with other families. the lack of sanitation and hygiene led to the spread of diseases as most homes had no running water or sanitation. people had also resulted to dumping their waste into the street making them dirty and allowed communicable disease to spread. as a result pits were even made to contain the building waste however this waste was emptied into the local rivers causing pollution in them.

during the industrial revolution transport had changed drastically, rivers had been used for transport for centuries, however they had difficulties. people needed to transport heavy goods however roads could not handle the weight and at this time vehicles did not exist. that was where canals came in.canals were deep enough to cope with barges which could move nearly forty tonnes of weight. this was more than a horse or carriage can move. by 1840 there's was nearly 4,500 miles of canals in Britain

the railway age

the railway age began in 1830 with the first railway running entirely on steam. George Stephenson contributed vastly to this age where identified and fixed a problem with the Newcomen engine;Edward Pease (the stockton & darlington's chief promoter) wanted to enhance transport links between collieries in county Durham and trade roots to London.Stephenson drew up plans for the railway,which was to be the first in the world designed specifically to use locomotives. parliament passed the act and the first iron rail was laid on 23rd May 1823. the railway opened on 27th September 1825. Due to his success Stephenson was quickly enlisted by the Liverpool & Manchester railway. Rocket, built by Stephenson, proved that engines could be fast and reliable.the rocket being the same engine that George drove during the Liverpool & Manchester railway opening on the 15th September 1830

Child Labour in Factories

during the industrial revolution child labour was a very large thing where children would work at an average of 8 and half years old. most of these children worked in the factory as piecers, where they would stand at the spinning machines and repair broken breaks in the thread.a few would work as scavengers in which they would crawl beneath machinery to rid of the dirt,dust or any other things that could disturb the mechanism.In the mines, children would mindthe trap doors and picking out coals at the pit, or carry picks for the miners. In towns, most boys were employed as errand boys or chimney sweepers. though for children, working was very low when it comes to wages, and was dirty and dangerous, also resulting in them working long hours too.children would end up with life long deformities while working in a factory, this happened because they were often beaten if failed to do a task. however, The Factory Act of 1878 prohibited work before the age of 10 and applied to all trades. child labour had associated with the Laissez-faire capitalism where in which the government played a small role in economy as possible, thus resulting

in no rules for workers in factories.
