During World War 1, women were fighting for the right to vote. The war ended a year before women were granted the right to vote.
African Americans in the war
During the first world war, America was still very segregated. Many African Americans wanted to join the military and fight to show America that they were capable of fighting and being dedicated citizens. Despite a serious shortage of people willing to fight, the military turned away many African Americans who tried to enlist, sparking controversy and outrage.
Selective Service
The Selective Service Act of 1917 was put in place to solve a shortage of people who wanted to fight in the war. All men age 21 to 30 (later changed to 18-45) had to sigh a 'draft' to possibly be chosen to serve in the military.
The American Food Administration was founded to preserve food and keep food prices low. They created a lot of propaganda and posters encouraging people to eat less meat and wheat products.
Armistice day was the day the Germany sighed a peace agreement and the war ended. This is a picture of people celebrating the end of the war. Armistice Day is celebrated every year on November 11th.
Funding the War
The Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919. It required Germany to pay for all damage caused to civilians during the war.
During the war, Germany paid for the Axis powers. Britain funded the allies until it ran out of money and had to borrow from the United States.
Propaganda
There was a lot of propaganda during the war that was made to convince men to enlist in the military. This is a piece of propaganda that tells young men to fight for their country.
Anti-Immigration
Because the US was so against Germany, they did not like having German immigrants in the country. This is a drawing that depicts a German man attempting to enter America. The man's belongings have words like "poverty" and "disease" written on them.
Espionage and Sedition Acts
Espionage and Sedition acts were laws that made it illegal with the military and to promote the success of America's enemies. This means that it was a crime to outwardly support Germany or to create speech that was in any way promoting the success of countries on Germany's side.
National War Labor Board
The National War Labor Board was appointed by Woodrow Wilson. Its purpose was to mediate disputed over labor during the war. It supported equal pay for women and the right to form unions.
