Literature in the Wiemar Republic: 3D Gallery

Expressionism

This was a new form of literary movement, pioneered by a group of artists called Neue Sachlichkeit. They did work in a realistic style, going against the common expressionism and abstraction of the time. The art reflected the post World War I period, and was down to earth, therefore seen as shocking.

Thomas Mann

He earned the Nobel Prize for Literature due to his early works, Death in Venice and The Magic Mountain. The Magic Mountain was a work that showed how his stance had changed, and that he had adopted a new belief of democratic principals.

Bertolt Brecht

Bertolt Brecht was a revolutionary practitioner, who created a new form of Epic Theatre, which involved the actors breaking the fourth wall, which separates the audience from the characters onstage. When Hitler rose to power, Brecht was exiled from Germany, and spent time in Scandinavia, and went on to do some film work in Hollywood. At the same time, all of his previous works were gathered up and burned in Germany, and he was no longer regarded as a German Citizen. However, some of his greatest works were written during this time. He wrote his greatest plays, theoretical essays, poems and also started to write an unfinished novel, The Business Affairs of Mr. Julius Caesar. he even wrote a play based on Hitler's Rise to power!

Erich Maria Remarque

He is a novelist probably most well known for his novel, All Quiet on the Western Front. This Novel was shocking, as it described the daily horrors that soldiers on the Western Front had to endure. This went completely against what German Citizens had been told about the war, and heavily contrasted to the patriotic literature that Germany had been exposed to. Remarque left for Switzerland in 1932. when this happened, all of his previous literature was banned by the Nazis. Like Brecht, he went to America, and there he met his second wife, the American Actress Paulette Goddard, and they settled on Lake Maggiore until he died.

Disorder and Early Sorrow

This book, by Thomas Mann, gives the reader insight into the life of a family in 1920's Germany, in the last years of the Wiemar Republic. The book focuses on the economic instability and the social upheaval in Germany at the time. The main character of the book, Professor Cornelius, finds peace in his work. Whilst the revolution goes on around him, he finds comfort in the dead significance that the past held. He also views the new, contemporary art forms as false and fraudulent, even though his children are so attracted to them.

All is Quiet on the Western Front

This was a book written by Remarque, which contradicted all that the German Government had worked on concerning war. This book describes the daily horrors that the soldiers constantly faced when on the front lines. After the general public had been exposed to how patriotic the soldiers were when on the Western front, the view that the public had on war as a whole was tarnished.

Modernism

This is another example of the new art form pioneered as a result of Wiemar Germany.
