The Captain James Fisk Wagon Train left Fort Abercrombie in July 1862, headed west escorting settlers west to the Montana gold fields. Captain Fisk talked the soldiers into taking one of the Mountain Howitzer Cannon from Fort Abercrombie.
5th Minnesota Infantry Co. D 1862 Fort Abercrombie
The 5th Minnesota Infantry Co. D. was stationed at Fort Abercrombie in September of 1862. The soldiers were training for the Civil War and Indian Wars. During the battles with the Dakota at Fort Abercrombie on September 3rd and 6th 1862 three Mountain Howitzer Cannons were used to defend the fort. Five soldiers died in the battles at the fort and the number of Dakota that were killed is undetermined.
First steamboat on Red River 1859
Anson Northup was the first steamboat to sail on the Red River in 1859. Anson Northup drug the steamboat across land in the winter of 1858 and launch the steamboat north of Moorhead and sailed it up to Fort Gary in Canada and back to Fort Abercrombie in 1859. Anson Northup received $2000 reward for the first steamboat on the Red River.

The original site of Fort Abercrombie at Slab Town was located on a 15 acre oxbow located on the east side of the Red River today. John Joseph Abercrombie built the first fort site in 1858, he didn't realize the Red River floods and the fort had to be moved to higher ground in 1860 of the current location.
Fort abercrombie Guardhouse built in 1862
The guardhouse is the only original building on the fort grounds today. The guardhouse was sold when the fort closed in 1877, and it was used as a home until 1939 when it was donated back to the site.

Fort Abercrombie trained soldiers to be sent to the Civil War in the south. President Lincoln was a member of Congress when money was allocated to build Fort Abercrombie in 1857. President Lincoln was in control of the Union Army during the Civil War. Union soldiers were stationed at Fort Abercrombie in 1862. Lincoln died in 1865 when the Civil War ended. Fort Abercrombie remained open until 1877 protecting the wagon trains headed west, building of the railroads and steamboat travel on the Red River.

The three blockhouses that were built on the grounds of Fort Abercrombie after 1862 were used to train soldiers and used as look out posts. The blockhouses today are replicas built in 1939.
