Life in factories and mines was really hard for the millions of people in the working class.

New machines and inventions completely bypassed the putting-out system for the sheer numbers of goods that could be produced. The industrial revolution started underway and brought great wealth to the people who kickstarted it, but brought poor living conditions and low wages to the workers of the factories.

Mining was one of the most dangerous jobs someone could have during the industrial revolution.

Because of the constant need for iron and coal, there was a new need for miners. They worked in complete darkness and breathed constant coal dust which led to diseases like cancer and black lung disease. While miners were paid more, there were always dangers of explosives, flooding, and collapsed tunnels.

Women were thought of to follow rules better and were paid less than men.

Most factory workers were women because they were thought to be easier to manage, efficient, quicker, and it was thought that they could adapt to machines better then men could. Employers also hired women because they could pay the women half as much as they could men, but most women had to work 12 or more hours a day.

Children worked in mines and factories alongside men and women, but they dealt with some of the most dangerous jobs.

The factories and mines often hired young children because of their nimble fingers and how they could move quickly. The kids changed spools in hot, humid textile mills, they crawled under dangerous machines to repair broken or damaged threads, and some had to sit all day in the dark opening and closing air vents. These labor conditions caused some children to break bones, develop diseases, and maybe even lose fingers.

The laissez-faire thinkers were capitalist philosophers who thought that the government shouldn’t interfere with anybody’s personal lives in the early to mid-1800s.

Most Laissez-faire economics emerged in the early 1800s, where the middle-class business leaders took a very “hands-off” approach to the economy. The people that thought this way argued that natural laws should be allowed to operate without interference. The thinkers believed that there shouldn’t be any government intervention and that people should be left to improve their life on their own.

Many women involved themselves in strikes and labor unions in the 1800s as socialist thoughts started to break out through society.

Many women that worked in factories weren’t paid enough for the long hours they worked and the harsh conditions they faced, so they joined unions and went on strikes. Originally many strikes weren’t successful but after they prevailed for long whiles, or they gathered a big enough body, some companies started to negotiate with the strikers. The strikers started to focus on more feminist ideas, arguing their unfair conditions and rights.

With new socialist ideas popping up, there was a push for reform and new laws regarding labor for children.

While the laissez-faire and capitalist thinkers praised individual rights, socialist thinkers emerged and condemned the wrongs of capitalism. Under socialism, people straught to have society as a whole, and as a whole people would operate farms, factories, railways, and large corporations. These socialist thinkers campaigned greatly for child labor laws, and they pushed for the organization of labor unions as well as equal success for everyone.

New mechanized farming tools, such as the seed drill, not only made farming easier but made it more successful. This boom in the success of farming then contributed to a large population spike, and soon urbanization of the previously rural areas. Because there was an abundance of food, people were eating healthier and living longer.

The Music Lesson

As more coal became readily available, people created the steam engine. Originally to take water from coal mines, it was eventually used in ships and trains. With this new abundance of coal, the manufacturing of iron became easier and the iron was now higher quality. Which, in turn, helped to build more engines, ships, and trains.
