If slaves misbehaved, didn't do their work right or tried to run, he usually was hung up on a tree by his legs and got whipped. Slave owners obviously didn't kill the slaves since that would be just wasting money.
Cramped conditions
When slaves were transported, slave masters didn't care about how good the conditions for slaves were, but more that how much slaves could be taken in one go. So slaves were cramped and chained together like in the picture above. Needless to say, the conditions were extremely unsanitary, and a lot of slaves died from sickness that got transmitted quickly among them.
Being Thrown Overboard
Since the food supply is finite on a ship, slave masters had to take drastic measures. They took the weakest slaves on the ship, chained them together, and threw them overboard, drowning them with no chance to escape.
Slaves after the abolishment
Even after slavery was abolished completely, some people continued to exploit black people for work with absolute minimum wage.
Slaves dying during work
Slaves during those horrible times were working way more than a normal working environment would allow it, and would often die right on spot because of over-exhaustion. Sometimes, slaves were bought just to be worked to death.
Slaves Being Sold
When reaching their designated location, slaves were rubbed with a substance containing lemon juice, tar and gunpowder to appear healthier. Then they were lined up before slave owners and put onto auction like some kind of an animal or good. Slave owners would then look over each slave thoroughly and give them an appropriate price.
Being Separated from Families
Quite often, slaves were separated from their families and sent to absolutely different locations, never to be met again.
Overcrowding
As said before, slave ships were filled with slaves, fit in inhumane positions and unsanitary conditions. This could be lead to overcrowding on the ship, transmitting deadly diseases to both slaves and slave masters.
Slaves' Dormitories
To no surprise, slave masters didn't care how slaves survived as long as they did, so they were given absolute basic shacks to live and sleep in during their little free time
Terrible Working conditions
Working more than 10 hours a day, with little to no free time, under supervision of slave owners or "loyal" slaves, slaves had to work without stopping and making sure that the work is done well, or else they could face punishment, which lead to deaths of many slaves.
