The main contenders of the civil war were the Reds (the Bolsheviks or Communists) vs the Whites , who were all the oppponets of the Bolsheviks (the tsarists and nobles, middle class constitutional democrats, Mensheviks and Socialist revolutionaries,) which only had 1 thing in common, which is that they were against the Bolsheviks
Factors impacting the outcome of the Civil War
Reds:
They had control on most of the railways from Petrograd to Moscow
They held the central area of western Russia, which contained most of the large industrial centres ablr to produce munitions for the war
Trotsky was a superb leader. He built uo the red army form nothing. He had more than 50,000 experienced former Tsarist officers and political commissars
Trotsky was very courageous, he had a special train which took him and his soldiers to the places were fighting was the hardest
White:
They were scattered throghout the central area of Western Russia, often within a hundred miles form each other
Communication was difficult
They lacked good leaders. Commanders were often disrespectful towards their soldiers and set a bad example, by drinking and taking drugs
The White generals did not trust each other and often failed to cooperate with the attacks
The Whites consisted of different groups, all with different aims and beliefs, where there was often fighting and squabling. The revolutionarist often failed to cooperate with the Tsarists.
