Romulus And Remus
According to legend, Romulus and Remus were the twin founders of Rome. Their mother, Rhea Silvia was killed when they were babies. The twins were saved by a servant who placed the two babies into a basket on the Tiber River. Tiberinus, the Tiber River god, calmed the waters, and the basket landed on the banks of the river. Romulus and Remus were found by a wolf, named Lupa, who took care of them. Eventually, they were discovered and cared for by a shepherd named Faustulus, and his wife, Acca Larentia. When Romulus and Remus grew up, they wanted to build a city. They argued on where to build the city, and decided to consult augury. Augury is a type of prophecy that involves counting birds. Remus saw 6 birds, and Romulus saw 12. Therefore, Romulus got to build the city where he wanted to. Remus made fun of one of Romulus’ ideas. At this point, the story gets murky. Remus either gets killed by the Roman gods for disrespecting Rome, or one of Romulus’ followers kills Remus, or as another legend says, Romulus himself kills Remus. Romulus mourns the loss of his brother. After Remus died, Romulus built the city and named it Rome, after himself. Romulus continued to rule as king, until he either disappeared, became a god, or got killed by the senate.-Anand
