Extensive wind pattern research went into the battle when gases were introduced. Teams had to perfectly hit a specific place on the other teams side to get gases to flow into their trenches
Gas Sweeps
This image shows how big chemical warfare was in WW1 as you can see the giant gas clouds sweeping over the battlefield
Soldiers Running Through the Gas Clouds
This image shows soldiers barreling through the chemical cloud to escape the poisonous gases that could severely harm or even kill them.
Gas Masks
During battle, soldiers had to wear masks like these to protect themselves from inhaling the poisonous chemicals that took many soldiers lives
Alfred Richards
This is a photo of Alfred Richards, a man in the war that tried to prevent the deadly effects of the weapon by working in cure research.
This was a letter sent home from one of the soldiers in WW1 who had to put up with the gas attacks. In the letter he says, "I expect you have heard at the office about me being in England suffering from gas poisoning." This person was pulled out of the war after a gas attack and suffered from many injuries. Though he recovered, many other didn't because of the deadly effect this weapon had.
Newspaper
This is a photo of a newspaper that was written. A delivery man got caught in a cloud of mustard gas and he was found unconscious in the trenches. Even people outside of the war were killed because of the massive and destructive role this weapon played in the battle
Mustard Gas Effects
This is a painting that shows the people that were affected by the mustard gas. You can see the piles of dead bodies hanging along the sides and the soldiers in the middle that were also affected.
This is a picture of all the different shells that were used to contain the gases and were sent over to the other team to bust open and poison them. Mustard gas was one of the main, and most deadly, type of chemical used in the war
Gas Shell Storage
From the gas shell picture to the left, I thought that it would be small containers but this is a real look at the size. This is a stockpile of gas in the Belgian Forest. This just shows how deadly this weapon was because there wouldn't be any reason to make so much if it wasn't going to affect the war
