BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

The battle was fought on September 17, 1862 at Antietam Creek, between General Robert Lee for the confederacy and General George McClellan for the Union. It was one of the bloodiest one day battles in the United States history. on September 13, was a turning point in favor of the Union, because of the discovery of the Special 191 plan that the Union soliders found that belong to General Lee. The battle began at dawn on September 17, with the Bloody Lane, having a body count of 5,000 men dead and injured which lead to General Lee losing the battle to General McClellan, and the Union won.

LINCOLN'S ASSASINATION

President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865 at the Ford's theatre by John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor and confederate supporter. This happened 5 days after General Robert Lee surrendered at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia which ended the Civil War. At approximately 10:15, Booth slipped into the box with a 44 caliber single shot derringer pistol and shot Lincoln in the back of the head. He also stabbed Rathbone who rushed him to protect the president.

EMANCIAPTION PROCLAMATION

Lincoln didn't actually free the 4 million women, men, and children who were enslaved in the United States. The document only applied to slaves in the confederate states not the border states loyal to the union. Lincoln personally hated slavery, he found it immoral. Lincoln also said the war was never about slavery it was to save the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation paved the way for permanent abolition of slavery with the signing of the 13th Amendment.

SHERMAN'S MARCH TO THE SEA

The Battle began from November 15 to December 21, 1864 in which General Sherman Lee's army marching from Atlanta to Savannah Georgia. This march was a fear tactic to convince the civilians in Georgia abandon the confederate cause. Sherman's soldiers didn't destroy the towns in their path, except the towns who fought back the soldiers stole their livestock, food and burned their barns. General Sherman's captured Atlanta on September 2, 1864 which was an important triumph because Atlanta was the railroad hub central for confederate industry. After they lost Atlanta the confederate headed west to Tennessee and Alabama attacking the union supply lines. General Sherman marched as he wrote "to the sea."

BATTLE OF APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE

This battle was fought on April 9, 1865, which lead to the surrender of General Robert Lee, to General Ulysses Grant, for the union, thus ending the Civil War. All soldiers were sent home with pardons and all their possessions. Grant and Lee were the highest ranked Generals.

GETTYSBURG ADDRESS

President Lincoln gave a speech on November 19, 1863 which became known as the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln was not originally scheduled to make that speech, it was supposed to be Edward Everett, who acknowledged that he could have never delivered a speech so powerful in 2 hours that President Lincoln gave in 2 minutes.

RECONSTRUCTION

Reconstruction was an attempt to reintegrate the South. Andrew Johnson was the President at the time of Reconstruction in 1865, and he passed restrictive "black codes" to control former slaves and other African Americans behavior and labor. Soon after Radical Reconstruction took over and blacks gained a voice in government for the first time in American history. This angered some whites and thus the emergence of the KKK. The Reconstruction era represented a Republican Party that was majority African American.

BLACK LEADERS DURING RECONSTRUCTION

During Reconstruction there were 2,000 African Americans holding public office in government on the local level all the way up to the U.S. Senate, this had never been achieved in history. Edward Brooke of Massachusetts became the first African American Senator to be elected by popular vote. Hiram Revels, was the first African American elected to the U.S. Senate he took the seat in Mississippi that had been vacated by Jefferson Davis. Revels was born free in North Carolina and went to college in Illinois.

CARPETBAGGERS AND SCALAWAGS

Northerns who came to the South in search of economic hope were called carpetbaggers. Southerns viewed them as opportunist looking to exploit people. Southerners who supported the carpetbaggers and reconstruction were called scalawags. In general terms "carpetbagger" was a person who arrived in town with possesions wrapped up in a blanket or carpet. Actually they were well educated and worked as teachers, merchants, and journalist. They worked at the Freedman's Bureau. Scalawags made up the biggest portion of the Radical Reconstruction.

BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG

This battle was over a three day period from July 1-3, 1863 between two great Generals. General Robert Lee, for the confederacy and General George Meade, for the Union. The first day July1, after meeting at the Potomac, the cofederate army decided to stop in a town for supplies, but found that the Union soldiers had already been there the previous day. The next day July 2, the bloodiest battle took place over the two days with a combined total of 35, 000 deaths and injuries. This weakened the confederate army. Which resulted on day 3 July 3, to General Robert Lee being defeated by George Pickett, which was known as the "Pickett's Charge."
