The Impact of Mathematics

Mathematics was created as a way for humans to interpret the world. Throughout time, the concepts of math have been integrated into all aspects of life to become what it is today. We can see this integration by examining four different periods of thought: the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Romantic Era, and the Trans-Humanist Era.

Mathematics: A Brief History

Mathematics has a unique history that can be difficult to pinpoint the exact dates as we attempt to uncover the true beginnings of it. However, it is believed that the complex systems of mathematics were introduced in 3000 BC and geometry was later developed at around 300 BC.

Mathematics of the Renaissance

The piece above, Madonna and Child Enthroned by Margaritone d'Arezzo, was painted around 1270. Though this is a beautiful artwork, the viewer can see the lack of depth and reality in the painting. This is a common theme of paintings, but we can see that the image above does not depict the image exactly how it would appear to the human eye in reality.

Mathematics of the Renaissance: A Revolution

Madonna of the Meadow by Giovanni Bellini made in around 1500 displays the increased complexity of the use of linear perspective. Linear perspective utilizes the axioms of geometry was developed by architect and mathematician Filippo Brunelleschi to depict depth on canvas. Clearly, there is a significant difference in the complexity of this image depicting the Madonna and child in comparison to the prior piece.

Enlightenment: A Turning Point in Mathematics

Above is a portrait of David Hilbert by Anna Gorban. Hilbert was a mathematician during the Enlightenment as a time of immense advancements in math and science. He pioneered the rationality of mathematics as he believed that it holds the answers to all of the world's questions. During this time, humans experience "an age of reason" where we utilized math and science to understand the world.

Romanticism: A Rejection of Reason

Despite the growth of mathematics, humans did experience a rejection of this logical manner of thought in the Romantic Era. This mode of thought arose in contrast to the Enlightenment and grew towards the end of the Enlightenment. The painting above, Wanderer Above the Sea by Caspar David Friedrich, depicts the Romantic emphasis on the individual and strong emotions. This new era of thought revealed limits to reason and the necessity for knowledge and morals along with reason.

Reemergence of Reason

We skip over multiple other periods of thought and examine the social movement of today known as Trans-Humanism. Humans again return to science as these thinkers believe in the enhancement of the human race through the use of science which we have established is based and supported by mathematics. Trans-humanists utilize mathematical concepts to achieve perfection of the human race.

Mathematics in Art

The image above demonstrates the calculation and geometry that is incorporated to create complex paintings. Mathematical calculations are used in every different shape within the entirety of the image to create perfection in its proportions and perspective. This image incorporates the intricacies of mathematical calculation into visual art to illustrate the necessity for mathematics in creating art that is realistic.

Mathematics as Art

Art is described by many as a form of expression. Mathematicians use proofs to express the reasoning behind their claims. Proofs are a form of mathematical expression that are beautifully precise and utilize rationality of the human thought process which mathematicians consider their own art.

Precision of Math

To close this exhibit, we will examine he image shown above called Instruments Of Mathematical Precision by Vintage Design Pics. This drawing depicts the mathematical precision in creating everyday items. In the creation of practically everything people have in their homes, specifically instruments as shown above, require this mathematical precision to work properly. With incorrect calculations or the complete ignorance of math, in this case, the instrument would fail to create such beautiful sounds. Thus, the beauty of art relies on the incredulous field of mathematics.
