Rubbish
Victorian cities did not have an effective system for rubbish collection. This lead to there being many huge piles of rubbish rotting in the streets and courtyards. Because of this, the streets became extremely unhygienic and were breeding grounds for diseases, which spread rapidly and were highly infectious. This also attracted vast numbers of rats. This caused bad health because some of the diseases were deadly. As well as this, because of the rubbish, there was a bad smell on the streets.
Damp houses
Victorian houses were significantly damp because they were not built well especially the houses for the poor. The walls of the houses were only single brick, the walls were made from earth and the material that the roof was made from wasn’t strong enough.
Poor ventilation
It was difficult for fresh air and light to enter many houses. This is due to the fact that the houses in the city were all built so close together. This lead to disease because the air inside the houses was not necessarily clean so fresh air was important to stay healthy.
