Padlet

Padlet is a freemium tool that allows you to create a digital bulletin board where people can post and collaborate on ideas. Think of it like a virtual version of a posterboard and sticky-notes. Because it is digital, however, posts can include hyperlinks, voice recordings, and videos, along with images, drawings, map locations, and more. Teacher tools allow for the moderation of posts and control over things such as liking and voting on posts. There are also different formats, including freeform, list organization, and timeline. One unique thing about the free version is that you have all of the features of the premium version. You are just limited to three padlets.

Canva

Canva is an online design tool that specializes in templates for a variety of print- and web-based uses. It is a great place to design a flier, banner, poster, or even a Zoom background. In fact, all of the design elements that you see scattered through this course were designed in Canva. Making an account on Canva is free, as is using it. Some images and designs cost money, but you do not need to pay until you are ready to print your design (so you can use them as placeholders while you find what you want). You can also upload your own images and graphics to use in Canva for free. If you are a K-12 teacher, definitely register for Canva for Education, which will essentially get you a Canva Pro account for free! This is an enormous value, so take advantage of it if you are able to.

EdPuzzle

EdPuzzle is a free tool that allows you to embed questions, comments, and voice-overs into videos. It is an excellent accompaniment to any online lesson because it turns the naturally passive nature of watching a video into an interactive experience that requires learners to focus and think as they watch. Teachers can search from a massive library of already created EdPuzzles to adapt, or they can create their own with any video either online or uploaded. It is especially recommended as an interactive addition to screencast lessons. Live data is provided to show where each student is during a video (synchronous remote instruction, anyone?) and how many times a student needed to watch a segment to answer a question. It also integrates with Google Classroom.

FlipGrid

Flipgrid is a completely free (for teachers) application for recording student video responses in a collaborative discussion-style space. It is especially beloved by K-2 teachers because it does not require any reading or writing skills to participate. It also contains several fun filters and stickers, so it feels more like a social media app for students than a classroom tool. Teachers set up a topic and can control access and sharing throughout.

Flippity

Flippity contains 25 (and counting!) different templates for anything from flash cards, to board games, to certificate generators, to randomizers. It is a treasure trove of engagement tools for both online and blended teachers. Each template is based on a Google Sheet, but if you are spreadsheet-adverse, don't worry! There are clear step-by-step directions for how to plug in your own information and get started.

Quizlet

Quizlet is a freemium tool that's great for any vocabulary content. It's easy to make and share lists, which makes it ideal for both teacher-led and student-centered activities. Quizlet Live is part of the paid account, but is LOVED by students as a synchronous learning activity. It may be worth taking advantage of the free trial to see if your students are as into it as Kas' students were.

Quizziz

Quizziz is a free gamified quiz tool that helps students test their skills and see what they have learned. While teachers can create quizzes brand new, there's also a handy database with tons of existing quizzes and questions that can be grabbed and edited as needed. The after-quiz reports make it easy to use quiz results to inform instruction. Teachers can see how students performed on each question and use that information to figure out what needs to be retaught or readdressed, as well as which students might need some individual or small-group reinforcement. When creating their own quizzes (limited to single- or multi-select multiple choice), teachers can add images as well as customize the feedback students see after each question on the quiz. Feedback comes in the form of memes (either pre-made or custom), which display based on right or wrong answers. Students can take the quizzes all together competitively as a class (and see classmates' progress), or teachers can assign the quiz as homework and have students complete it on their own time.

Thinglink

Thinglink is a webtool that lets you add a layer of interactivity to any image, video, or 360° media. It's a game changer! You can easily create visual learning materials and virtual tours and empower students to work on projects and assignments using text, voice, photos, and video. It's a great way to add a narrative to an image and document added details, extended learning opportunities, and so much more!

AnswerGarden

AnswerGarden is a completely free and very simple word cloud generator. It can be useful for an introductory activity (What words come to mind when you think of X?) , a brainstorm (What is one possible idea/solution for X?) , or a socio-emotional "temperature check" (What word best describes how you are feeling today?). Answers are anonymous, but there are features that enable you to prevent mischief (prior approval before posting, preventing multiple votes for the same idea, etc.)

Nearpod

Nearpod, an online site, offers interactive lessons that can be guided by a teacher in a synchronous environment, used in an asynchronous environment by having students work at their own pace, or in front of a class of students. Nearpod lessons can embed all kinds of activities, from formative assessments to media to written responses and beyond. It will give an educator reports on student work and works well with Google Slides, Microsoft Power Point, pdfs and more. Nearpod has a multi-tiered approach to features, but can be used for free with up to 40 students per session.
