Ma’at is a goddess, the embodiment of
truth, order and justice.
Order in Egypt is maintained by upholding
the laws of Ma’at, this involved piety by everyone but was mainly the
responsibility of the Pharoah.
Ma’at was an important factor of Egyptian
Religion as their lively hood revolved around the order of the Nile. The laws
of Ma’at are a series of 42 laws found in the book of the dead. These laws were
held sacred and could be compared to the 315 mitzvot or the 10 Commandments.
Some laws include:
Rule 3. I have not stolen
Rule 4. I have not slain man nor woman
Rule 8. I have not told lies
