Dimensions: estimated 1,000 square metres

Provenance or collection: off the coast of Kuwait.

Description: the remains of a boat shed was found underwater off the coast of Kuwait. This ship shed could possibly have been used for housing both trade and war ships, however due to its location, it was most probably used for local trade and cargo movement within the Persian Gulf. This shed is not completely relevant to the economy, but I suggests that the Persia had a trade route that crossed oceans and due to the size and strategic location.

Provenance or collection: excavated in Takht-I Kuwad, currently part of the British Museum’s Oxus treasure collection.

Description: this is a gold ornamental accessory. It was most likely a hair or hat ornament due to the shape and attachment method. This item offers an insight to society and how the country was rich enough or had individuals that could afford luxury items. On further study it can display the amount abundance of gold in the empire and the wealth of the upper class.

Title: request from a land grant from the satrap

Provenance or collection: found on Egyptian coast, currently stored in Bodleian library, Oxford.

Description: this is the translation of a letter sent from a citizen to a satrap concerning the inheritance of his fathers estate. This is a small scale issue in terms of the empire but it displays what day to day life was like and the nature in which lands were devided amoungst people. This letter implies that it was customary for the land to transfer to a persons children. However that is not the case here. It is an important source when studying the economy as it details not only transactions of land but also how communications between citizens and satrap occurred.

Persian Daric Coin

Description: This coin is made of gold and has been punched with the image of a royal man, presumed to be Darius 1st. This coin shows that ancient Persia did have a currency which was unified under the king. The daric was first introduced by Darius, showing that the king took interest in the economy and that trade, bartering and tax was important enough for re-examination of use of currency.

Provenance or collection: The histories, volume 5, 53.

Description: Herodotus recounts many details of the Persian empire, and here discuss the length and functionality of Persia’s main internal trade route, the royal road. His words show that the importance of organised travel routes and easy movement was integral knowledge. It displays that ease of internal transport and allowing fast communication and trade was important enough to labour and pay for the construction of the royal road.

Description: This qanat contains of 427 wells and is still currently in use. These Qanats allow insight into many aspects of Persian society. The advanced architectural designs and the scale of this endeavour display the might of the Persian empire, as well as the interest in agriculture and farming methods. It shows the priorities of the king and the state in which the economy was in to allow the costs of such a construction in assistance of farming and water access.

Provenance or collection: Polyaenus’s stratagems, book 7.

Description: this is an extract of Polyaenus’s seventh volume of his stratagems series. It details how tax’s were decided and how the king entrusted parts of the economy to other people. When looking at the source, some parts might be exaggerated, but it is incredibly relevant to the economy due to the fact that it details how tax’s are regulated and shows that even though it was one empire, it function separately country to country depending on the rulers or satraps decisions.

Provenance or collection: found in Susa with remains of the palace

Description: this is a translated segment of part of the inscriptions found on the foundation of the palace in Susa. It details the creation of the palace, specifically the people who specialised in different areas. It can show the vastness and riches of the empire, but also how occupations were divided and allows insight into trades and how different areas of the empire specialised in certain crafts and how they were utilised.
