Mann Ist Mann

Josephine Baker, born on the 3rd of June, 1906 was one of the most prominent cabaret performers in the world. She was famous for her energetic dances, silly faces, and smile. One of her best known outfits was her “banana skirt,” consisting of 17-18 beaded foam bananas.

In the Weinmar republic, Baker would perform shows in Berlin, and during the course of 8 weeks, she would perform 65 almost entirely sold out shows. However, she was not only a dancer. She was also a spy for the French. She would gain information of Germany’s plans during her shows, and relay them to the French afterwords. She adopted 12 children throughout her lifetime, and called them the “Rainbow Tribe.” Baker also had a pet cheetah named Chiquita, and was good friends with Christian Dior!
