Dr. Mabuse the gambler is a silent film, based on the novel written by Norbert Jacques and directed by Fritz Lang. It is a crime/thriller about criminal mastermind Dr. Mabuse, who tries to make a fortune using unethical methods and run Berlin. He is tracked down by a police inspector, who wants to end the criminals legacy.
Metropolis, 1927
Metropolis is another silent film, directed by Fritz Lang in January 10th 1927. The original story was written by Thea von Harbou. It portrays the city of the future, with wealthy businessmen and industrialists living in luxury from ivory towers while their workers and staff work in inhumane conditions. This all changes however, when the ruler decides to enlist a mad scientist who leads the city to its ruin.
Die Nibelungen: Siegfried, 1924
Die Nibelungen: Siegfried is an adventure/drama film directed by Fritz Lang in February 14th, 1924. It tells the story of the brave Siegfried treacherous journey towards the Gunther's castle to seek Gunther's sister's hand in marriage. He fights and slays evil beings such as a dragon and an evil king on the way.
Kriemhild's Revenge, 1924
Kriemhild's Revenge, directed in 1924 by Fritz Lang is an adventure/action film, split into 2 parts. It is about a widow whose husband was killed by Hagen, and decides to create a revenge plot against the perpetrator. She also has to fight her brothers who've sworn alliance to Hagen. This ends up causing a war, and Kriemhild loses all that she once had.
Fritz Lang, 1890-1976
Fritz Lang (Friedrich Christian Anton Lang), born 5th December 1890 was an Austrian film director, producer and screenwriter who worked in Germany and produced in total 22 films. He is known for his ground breaking movies such as Metropolis (1927), and M (1931); both which deal with disturbing and controversial topics for the time. Director Fritz Lang is often seen wearing an eyepatch due to suffering an eye injury as a cavalry officer during WW1. He was nicknamed the "Master of Darkness" by British Film Institute.
Marlene Dietrich, 1901-1992
Marlene Dietrich was a German/American actress and singer. She is most famous for her fashionable style and diverse portrayals of women in the film industry. She acted in silent films on the Berlin stage, and acted as Lola Lola in The Blue Angel (1930); which brought her international fame.
The Blue Angel, 1930
The Blue Angel is a comedy/romance film directed by Josef von Sternberg in 1930. It is about a professor, who finds out his students are distracted by cabaret performer Lola Lola and decides to visit the local club where she performs. After seeing her perform, the teacher decides to quit his job and marry the young woman; which causes a steep decline in his once steady and prim life.
Greta Garbo, 1905-1990
Greta Garbo, a Swedish/American actress was an early star during the Berlin's silent and early golden eras of film. She travelled in August 1924 to Berlin, and later on was bought by German director G. W. Pabst, where she later stared in Die Freudlose Gasse; she was offered a film contract in Germany due to the success.
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, directed in 1922 by F. W. Murnau is a horror/fantasy film about a young land clerk is sent by his master to sort out a deal with Count Orlok. He suddenly finds out that Orlok is a vampire who is after his own wife, Ellen, and is sent on a dangerous journey into the unknown in order to keep his wife safe.
