How was the berlin wall built, how did it work, and the effect of it on people
Why was the berlin wall built?
The Berlin Wall divided families, friends, and communities overnight. Many East Berliners were cut off from loved ones in the West and couldn’t travel freely. Some lost jobs, homes, or access to education. Life in East Berlin became more controlled and restricted, with harsh punishments for trying to escape. The wall caused fear, isolation, and sadness, symbolizing how deeply the Cold War divided people’s lives.
Building of the berlin wall
August 13, 1961, the SED began to seal off the borders around West Berlin.
Why Was it built?
The Berlin Wall was built by East Germany in 1961 to stop its citizens from fleeing to West Berlin. After WWII, Germany was divided into East (Soviet-controlled) and West (Allied-controlled). Millions were escaping the communist East for better lives in the democratic West, which hurt East Germany’s economy. The wall physically and ideologically divided Berlin and became a key symbol of the Cold War.
