For wealthy Romans, life was good. They lived in beautiful houses – often on the hills outside Rome, away from the noise and the smell. Poor Romans lived in simple flats. These were called insulae . The Roman education system was based on the Greek system – and many of the private tutors in the Roman system were Greek slaves or freedmen.
