Roman Army

Roman soldiers wore a linen undergarment. Over this they wore a short-sleeved, knee-length woollen tunic. However, as their empire expanded into territories with colder climates, soldiers were allowed to wear leather, skin-tight trousers. Roman soldiers practised hand-to-hand combat with wooden swords, spears and shields that were deliberately much heavier than those they used in battle. Their diet was mostly grain: wheat, barley, and oats. The Romans were also very fond of fish sauce called liquamen (also known as Garum). At midday they ate a light meal of fish, cold meat, bread and vegetables. The final battle in this war was the Battle of Zama where the Roman general Scipio Africanus defeated Hannibal.

Roman every day life

Gladiatorial fighting was not the most popular entertainment.

Roman warships were not rowed by slaves.

They did not all die young.

Not all Romans spoke Latin.

For wealthy Romans, life was good. They lived in beautiful houses – often on the hills outside Rome, away from the noise and the smell. Poor Romans lived in simple flats. These were called insulae . The Roman education system was based on the Greek system – and many of the private tutors in the Roman system were Greek slaves or freedmen. Slavery in ancient Rome played an important role in society and the economy. Poor Romans ate bread, vegetable soup, and porridge. Meat was a luxury, unless they lived in the countryside and could go hunting or fishing.

The Roman Empire

Toward the end of the 5th century BC the Romans began to expand at the expense of the Etruscan states, possibly propelled by population growth. In 264 BC, the Romans and the Carthaginians had their first war. The more wealthy and powerful the Romans became, the more able they were to further expand their empire. 476 A.D. was when the roman empire fell. But its eastern half continued for another thousand years. Romulus, the last of the Roman emperors in the west, was overthrown by the Germanic leader Odoacer, who became the first Barbarian to rule in Rome.

Entertainment

They enjoyed fights between gladiators, and fights between people and animals. Roman emperors paid for free shows at theatres and amphitheatres. The Roman government wanted to keep the idle masses entertained because they knew that a large group of poor people was a major threat to their empire.
